Solution to Homework 1

a)
On the website choose Puerto Rico from the States drop-down box, then select the 2000 tab. First though, almost all totals are going to be uninteresting because in just about every aspect the USA is much bigger, so their totals will always be much bigger. For example:

Population of Males in 2000: PR 1,833577, USA 138,053,563

On the other hand the corresponding percentages can be interesting:
Percentage of population that is Male in 2000: PR 48.1%, USA 49.1%

Even some percentages are not very interesting, for example in PR 85.6% of the people speak a language other than English at home, vs. 17.9% in the US

Here are some other interesting ones:

in PR 60% of the people have a high school degree, vs. 80.4% in the US

in PR 2.9% of the people are foreign born, vs. 11.1% in the US

in PR 44.6% of the people are below the poverty level, vs. 9.2% in the US

b) go to Datasets, choose Sex by Age, State=Puerto Rico. You find
AgeMaleFemaleTotal
100-104258448706
105-1094759106
Over 110172744
Over 100322534856
so there were 856 people over the age of 100. There are 3,808,610 people in Puerto Rico, so the percentage of people over 100 is 856/3808610*100% = 0.022% (or about 1 in 4500)
